Hello, Berko!
The clocks go forward this Sunday and the town will celebrate Spring’s official arrival with jazz concerts, choir performances and a Cher tribute act (amongst other things).
But first, we're turning back time to take a look at the darker side of our most famous ruin.

Let’s get into it.
Damnable Stones: the darker side of the castle
The daffodils around the castle are coming out and this Saturday the Castle Choir are celebrating the arrival of spring at the Town Hall.
So the castle has been on my mind and inspired by last week’s look at archaeologist and Berko-local Sir John Evans, I’ve been digging up some of the castle’s darker stories.
After the Battle of Hastings in 1066, William the Conqueror came to Berko before London. The Archbishop of York surrendered to him here and so the Norman conquest was formally concluded on our doorstep. The castle went up shortly after, built by William's half-brother Robert of Mortain to guard the main route north through the Chilterns. Thomas Becket got hold of it in the 1150s and rebuilt the whole thing in stone, before his relationship with Henry II became complicated.
In 1216, a French prince arrived with trebuchets and spent twenty days hurling what the chroniclers recorded as ‘innumerable damnable stones’ at the walls. The garrison held out, but eventually surrendered. A century later, the Black Prince was using it as a favourite residence, and a captured French king — John II, taken at the Battle of Poitiers — was being held here while his ransom was negotiated. Geoffrey Chaucer is reported to have overseen renovation works on the site. Five queens passed through its walls before it fell into ruin and its stones were gradually pillaged to build houses elsewhere in the town.
This Sunday at 10am, a guided walk sets off from the castle gate taking in even more of the town's darker history. It’s a good time of year for it and details are in What’s happenin’.
Just don’t take the stones.
